Moment #25: Dennis DJ Johnson Day in Worcester!![]()

In the mid-1990s we had many sports stars as guests at our stores. We had over a dozen players from the New England Patriots, several baseball players, some pro-wrestlers, and some basketball players. All of these events were successful and fun, so when I learned that Dennis Johnson of the Boston Celtics had a son going to the same high school as my son Adam, I just had to ask him if he’d be interested in spending the day at my Worcester store! Dennis offered to be our guest if I’d donate his usual appearance fee to a charity of his choice and when I agreed, he checked his schedule and determined that the only day he had available was Saturday, June 15, 1996. I was disappointed because I had already booked a family vacation, but I knew the incredible staff at That’s Entertainment could handle this event. ![]()

The staff wanted this to be a big event, so they convinced a local sports-talk radio station to do a “live-remote” from our store on the day of the appearance. We contacted the mayor’s office to inform them of the event and since we were allowing everyone to get Dennis’s autograph at no cost, the city government decided to assist us to make this day even more special! The mayor agreed to send a representative to the store on the day of the event to make an official proclamation declaring June 15th as “Dennis Johnson Day In Worcester!” Once the local media heard this news, they were willing to jump on board to help us promote the event. We also convinced Fleer, a company that produced basketball cards, to donate a large quantity of basketball card packs so that we could have something to give to every person who came to see Dennis Johnson.![]()

A friend of the store with access to old NBA game tapes had pieced together an incredible "DJ career highlight reel." In between signing photos, Dennis would steal glances at the video, which was playing on a big TV screen to his side. There was a particular play shown at one point when DJ still played for the Phoenix Suns, that REALLY caught his attention: DJ barreled down the floor on the fast break, with Larry Bird hurrying back to defend the hoop. DJ went up strong as Bird jumped high for the block-- and DJ DUNKED it through! Pointing to the TV, DJ beamed and asked, "Can I get a copy of that?!" Our employees told him he could have the tape. "Great," said DJ, "When I bring that play up, Larry denies it ever happened. Now I have the PROOF!" The event was a great success! People really enjoyed meeting Dennis, the free autographs, and free cards too!![]()

When I returned from my vacation I ran into Dennis Johnson at the school and he told me that the staff at That’s Entertainment did a great job and he was pleased with how everything went. He was honored to have the mayor of Worcester declare that day as “Dennis Johnson Day.” ![]()

It’s no secret that one of the greatest things about That’s Entertainment is our staff’s wealth of knowledge in the products we sell. A customer can walk in any day of the week and receive help or an employee recommendation in almost any area of our store. Our staff’s interests stretch far beyond the departments they lead. Our video game and Magic the Gathering expert reads manga and comic books. Our Board Game and RPG specialist also paints miniatures, reads comics, and plays video games. Our Back-Issue specialist loves toys, comics, and music. Even our marketing manager reads comics, plays Magic the Gathering and board games. We’re geeks and we love it! ![]()

It was our staff’s personal interests that lead to an unforgettable guest appearance for Free RPG Day of 2018. ![]()

Camille, who is the head of our board game and tabletop role-playing department, along with Sorana, marketing manager and board game specialist, had heard that legendary fantasy author R.A. Salvatore lived locally to Worcester. One day on her day off, Sorana reached out to R.A. Salvatore, or Bob, as a longtime fan. Her hopes of a reply were small. She knew that Salvatore’s schedule was already busting at the seams, especially considering he was working on a new novel at the time and had just released Child of a Mad God earlier that year. What were the chances that one of the most highly revered fantasy authors of all time would see her message, let alone answer it?![]()

For those of you who are unfamiliar with R.A. (Bob) Salvatore, he is the creator of the infamous Drizzt Do ‘Urden character in the Forgotten Realms fantasy setting. Even if you have only played Dungeons and Dragons and never read a fantasy novel in your life, you would have heard of Drizzt Do ‘Urdern, as he is a recurring character in Dungeons and Dragons. He is an atypical drow (dark elf), who has forsaken both the evil ways of his people and their home in the Underdark, in the drow city of Menzoberranzan. We’re not going to expand on the rich world Salvatore has been writing about since the 1980s, but we will encourage you to go out there and read some of his material. If fantasy is your thing, you won’t be disappointed! Did we mention that Drizzt even has a magical black panther that travels to the astral plane? ![]()

Anyway, I digress… Sorana did in fact receive a reply from Bob Salvatore, and not only that, they engaged in a friendly conversation. They related on several topics, none of which were related to fantasy or his career, but rather to family and hardships. By the end of the conversation Sorana felt she had made a new friend. It was during this initial conversation that she invited Bob to be a special guest at their annual Free RPG Day Celebration on June 16th of 2018, which at the time was months away. Unfortunately, Bob expressed that his schedule was booked solid. Nevertheless, he left it open-ended. ![]()

Sorana, who was persistent, occasionally checked back with Bob to see if anything had changed… and by persistent, I mean she checked in on Bob every three weeks! She was beginning to feel like quite the pest, but this was important to both her and the store, and Bob seemed to understand this. ![]()

Time passed and now Free RPG Day was less than two weeks away and Sorana and Camille were losing hope. They believed Free RPG Day would still be great. After all, the store was giving away Free RPG books and running Free one-shot RPG events all day! Still, they were a bit forlorn, wistfully imagining how memorable his attendance would have been for so many fans. ![]()

Well, it just so happened that Bob reached out to Sorana this time to let her know that he would be in town during the week of Free RPG Day, and if we were still interested, he could “stop by” the store. It was as if the skies opened and angels began singing Hallelujah! At first, she thought he was pulling her leg. After all, Bob Salvatore doesn’t simply just “stop by.” He did go on to confirm that by stopping by he meant that he would be there to sign books and chat with fans. But now we understand… Bob was just too humble to say “guest appearance.” Of course, we accepted the offer, and then Sorana quickly got to work on promoting the event. With less than two weeks to promote, she had to spread the word far and fast. There wasn’t even enough time for a press-release, but thanks to social media, the word on his appearance spread like wildfire. ![]()

A long line had formed inside the store for R.A. (Bob) Salvatore the afternoon of Free RPG Day. Everyone was holding their most beloved books by the author, waiting with eager anticipation. Bob took time to engage every fan, periodically remarking on the editions of novels the fans presented to him for signing. He spent two hours cracking jokes and talking about his past and current work. He was genuinely kind and appreciative of his fans. The Dungeon Masters who had been busy hosting the one-shot role-playing games in our Red Room, also stopped by eagerly to give their thanks to Bob for his contributions to the fantasy genre. It was a happy day, and even to this day, we receive thanks from attendees for hosting the event. ![]()

A few weeks later, Bob Salvatore, with the help of his nephew, sold a giant collection of vintage Role-Playing books and magazines from his personal collection to our store. It was the largest and most beautiful RPG collection we had ever seen! Among the collection were rare, sealed box sets and sealed modules dating back to the early 80s. With Bob’s approval, we certified every item in the collection. When we finally launched the collection, many gamers and Salvatore fans came out to purchase pieces for their own gaming purposes or just for keepsake.![]()

Bob has mentioned possibly returning for another appearance at That’s Entertainment. We hope that day comes soon; it would be an honor to have him back.![]()
