Welcome to our Dire Troll Paint Night Contest (Fitchburg Edition 2021)! We apologize for the delay on the Fitchburg contest. Unfortunately, we had only received 2 submissions, and well, what kind of contest would it be with just 2 contestants? So we owe it to our Fitchburg contestants for giving us the “ok” to allow 2 delayed entries from our Worcester contest to enter into our Fitchburg contest.
It’s another great contest and we need your help with THE FAN VOTE! Please review each contestant’s submission. Each contestant has submitted 5 images or less, so you’ll want to click on all the images below to get a good sense of detail, creativity, and technique. Once you’ve selected your TOP FAVORITE Dire Troll, scroll down to the bottom and you will find each contestant’s name with a check-box next to it. Vote on the name that corresponds with the Dire Troll you’ve selected. Please vote carefully because YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CHANGE YOUR VOTE. Only one vote per person, please. Feel free to share this page with your friends so that they too can vote. Votes must be in by midnight (12am) early Wednesday morning, June 16th. The winner of the FAN VOTE will receive a $25 store credit prize and the choice of any gaming miniature retailing $9.99 or under!
There will also be a separate STAFF VOTE! Employees of That’s Entertainment will also have until midnight (12am) early Wednesday morning, June 16th. to vote on their TOP FAVORITE Dire Troll miniature! The top three prizes will be $15 in store credit for 3rd place, $25 in store credit for 2nd place, and $50 in store credit for 1st place!

Moment #40: We take the auction outside!![]()

Our popular No-Minimum-Bid auctions were a LOT of fun back in the 1980s! I was determined to have REAL auctions, with NO minimum starting bids and NO reserves. It's more exciting that way, because you really could get an incredible deal! Remember, the Chandler Street store was pretty small, so our FIRST auction was actually held OUTDOORS in the vacant lot BEHIND our store! We sold hundreds of vintage collectibles to the crowd of customers who all braved the heat outside. As an auctioneer, I always kept it moving as fast as I could, a-lot-a-minute on average-- if you weren't interested in the item I was holding, you wouldn't have to wait long for the next one! For our next several auctions, we moved to The Yankee Drummer Inn in Auburn, Massachusetts so that all of our bidders would be far more comfortable. The last few were held in the Red Room at the Park Avenue store. But it would be tough to top the memory of that FIRST one held outside!![]()

Moment #41: Neil Gaiman visits us in 1989!![]()
Neil Gaiman was a barely-known comic book author when DC Comics began publishing his "Sandman" series back in the late 1980s. We at That's Entertainment really enjoyed Sandman, and our "inside connections" at DC Comics offered to send Neil to our store as a guest. It was one of Neil's EARLIEST USA comic shop appearances! He came to our store in 1989, just as Sandman issue #8 (the acclaimed first appearance of Death) was released. DC Comics, realizing they had a winner, had offered comic shops around the country a great deal: for every copy of the comic ordered, we'd get another copy at no charge! In anticipation of Gaiman's appearance, we had ordered TWICE the number of copies as we normally would. Even though this meant we would now have FOUR TIMES the usual amount of Sandman available, a big and enthusiastic crowd turned out to meet Mr. Gaiman and we sold EVERY copy! So... if you see copies of Sandman # 8 around the Worcester area, be sure to check to see if they are autographed by Neil Gaiman!![]()
