They will be honoring the special occasion with live musical performances and limited-edition vinyl records. Doors will open at 8:00 a.m., two hours earlier than usual. Musical performances will begin at 12:00 p.m. and will continue until 4:00 p.m. (the store will remain open until 7:00 p.m., as usual). A wide variety of special Record Store Day vinyl albums will be available for purchase throughout the day. However, quantities are limited; therefore, shoppers are encouraged to stop in early for the best chance of finding rarer titles. Artists new and old are represented, such as Pearl Jam, Taylor Swift, Pixies, Belinda Carlisle, UFO, Prince Rakeem, Pogues, PM Dawn, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Jesus Jones, and many more!Musical performances will begin at 12:00 p.m. with soul band The Sunta Africa Group, followed by jazz performer Gabriel Cain at 1:00 p.m. Then at 2:00 p.m., R & B/Hip Hop singer Elion Virtuoso will be taking the stage from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Finally, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Ovr. Clock will be turning up the beats with music inspired by drum & bass, UK garage, and other electronic genres.
Gabriel Cain (12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m.) – According to his parents, Cain was 2 years old in the living room of their home in Seattle when “The Lawrence Welk Show” appeared on the TV. PBS had broadcasted a marathon of episodes, each dedicated to the music of an early 20th century American Songwriter. They remember Cain dragging his wooden rocking chair up to the screen and watching the entire marathon. He was hooked. Even as an adult, he still feels the childlike wonder when he listens to, plays, and teaches music.
In high school Cain studied Jazz Guitar. He loved the playing of Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and Kenny Burrell. In his late teens, inspired by Andres Segovia and Julian Bream, he began studying the classical guitar. Through practice, he strived to develop an original and distinct style. He really enjoyed sharing his music with live audiences and is looking forward to a great Record Store Day at That’s Entertainment! Check out Gabriel Cain on YouTube!
The Sunta Africa Band (1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.) – The Sunta Africa Band is a force of Funk mixed with some Soul, R&B, Reggae & Blues that brings an eclectic selection of original music and covers to any stage they play on. The band came together when Sunta Jones (Soul singer/songwriter, www.suntaafrica.com) decided to assemble a backing band for a studio project she had completed. What happened next was an organic development of an infectious groove & musical vibe that penetrates you and keeps you wanting more.
Elion Virtuoso (2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.) –Singer/songwriter Elion Virtuoso’s musical style is influenced by several different genres, including Hip Hop, R & B, and Latin American Urban. Through touring, marketing, and pure drive and passion, Elion’s fame is ever growing, especially in his home city of Worcester, Massachusetts. Elion V has opened for big names such as A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Fetty Wap, and Young Thug. Check him out on Spotify, YouTube, and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/IamElion/)
Ovr. Clock (3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.) – Hailing from Massachusetts, Ovr. Clock makes electronic music that spans across the genre’s wide spectrum and is always trying to make sounds more daring than the last. His sound borrows influences from drum and bass, breakcore, dance, and UK garage. Producing music has been an outlet and cathartic remedy in his life, and he’s on a mission to give some of that back. Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica.
This is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store—the staff, the customers, and the artists—to come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day. In 2008 a small list of titles was released on Record Store Day and that list has grown to include artists and labels both large and small, in every genre and price point. In 2015, 60% of the Record Store Day Official Release List came from independent labels and distributors. The list continues to include a wide range of artists, covering the diverse taste of record stores and their customers. For more information regarding Record Store Day, visit www.recordstoreday.com.
Marketing manager Sorana Gatej says, “Record Store Day brings out audiophiles and collectors alike. I look forward to listening to our diverse musical line-up playing, and hearing shoppers rejoice at finding rare limited-edition vinyl records.”
Manager and record specialist Pete Beaudoin says, “We have ordered LOTS of Record Store Day vinyl but come early for the best chance to find what you’re looking for. Come back for the bands starting at noon!”
