For the month of March we have two new minis to choose from (Mothman and Djinn) for our painting contest. Select one of your choice, or both if you would like to enter twice. However, you will have only two weeks to paint, so only take on two minis if you are confident you can complete both within that time frame. We recommend quality over quantity for best results, and a better chance of winning one of our store credit prizes! ALL VOTING WILL BE CONDUCTED BY OUR STAFF! We will no longer have “fan voting” in our hallway. I’m sorry to say, we had to do away with the “Fan-vote” portion of this contest due to too many fraudulent votes. HOWEVER, we will be adding a top $50 store credit prize for the miniature with the BEST NARRATIVE (read rules for complete details below).
RULES
The event will start on Saturday, March 28th at 12pm in our Great Hall, and will run until 4pm. Please reserve your spot by registering for the miniature(s) you would like to paint down below on this page. On the day of the event, please arrive a few minutes early to allow yourself to check in and pay at the front counter. Once you have paid, you will receive your miniature(s). You must be present for at least an hour, or long enough to start working on your miniature, to participate in the contest. Why may you ask? Because there are many new painters who would love to learn from our more experienced painters, and sometimes it’s vice versa! We are aiming to grow a community of creative-thinking people. We encourage participants to socialize at this event and to walk around to look at other participants’ progress. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Chuck, our painting instructor, will be leading the event. He will be happy to offer suggestions on painting techniques if you’re looking to achieve a certain “look,” but his prime objective will be to encourage creative freedom.
Although this is a miniature PAINTING contest, we encourage our contestants to go the extra mile and be as creative as they like! We encourage sculpting, basing, flocking, diorama-building, whatever extra elements you’d like to incorporate into your creation, but please just keep in mind that we will FIRST AND FOREMOST judge the miniature on painting technique. However, this time around, we will award the miniature with the BEST NARRATIVE $50 in store credit! This prize is separate from the top three painting prizes (1st = $50 store credit, 2nd = $35 store credit, and 3rd = $25 store credit) and therefore, you could win an additional $50 in store credit! So please go ahead and tell a story with your miniature/diorama! We can’t wait to see it! There’s a chance you could win BEST NARRATIVE even if your miniature is not the best painted!
If you use putty on your miniature, or if you’re kit-bashing, please maintain at least 70% of the original miniature in your final creation. We want to still see the original miniature underneath the sculpting. Added limbs, antlers, antennae, wings, capes, accessories, masks, etc, are welcome.
Please return your finished miniatures no later than 6pm, Monday, April 13th. The miniatures will be displayed in our front Hallway for approximately two weeks. All participants will be contacted to collect their miniatures when they are ready for pick up. Winners will be announced on our Facebook page, our website, and in our newsletter!
When we will be judging submissions, we will be looking for painting techniques that include smooth shading and contrast. Lines should be tight, but if you go messy, then it should look deliberate and stylized. You choose the colors! We won’t tell you what a wrong color or a right color is. Be creative and trust your instincts! Basically, whichever look you’re going for… realistic, whimsical, cartoony, black and white, muted, saturated, limited color palette, abstract… then lean on those looks and try to execute them to the best of your ability. Use reference materials if you like!
If you choose to focus on your narrative for the $50 store credit prize, we will be looking for a cohesive story told through a diorama, through added elements, a theme, etc. We are not looking for a literal written narrative. Feel free to add other miniatures, buildings, or natural elements to achieve this.
MOST IMPORTANT RULE
Have fun! If you’re not having fun, then you’re doing it wrong. 😀
